Born and raised in the Minneapolis metropolitan area, Will Steger always
knew his dream was to live in the wilderness. At just 19 years old and a
sophomore in college, Will was paddling his canoe in the wilds of northern
Minnesota's Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness and surrounding area. He
stumbled upon a narrow, pristine lake, bordered by a high bluff, and
instantly knew this is where he needed to settle. He planted his ax,
purchased the property and began laying the plans for a new life on what he
calls, The Homestead.
The Homestead, which includes Will's hand-built cabin, a fully outfitted
woodshop, and many out-buildings, has been central in launching record
breaking expeditions including the first unsupported dogsled expedition to
the North Pole (1986), the longest dogsled expedition in history, across
Greenland (1988), the first dogsled crossing of Antarctica (1989-90) among
several others.
Today, the energy and excitement of the Homestead continues with the
planning of future expeditions and other projects. Most notably, is the
establishment of the Will Steger Foundation. Grounded in environmental
education and adventure learning, the Will Steger Foundation will operate
out of an impressive 5-story granite and log environmental think-tank.
Completion of the building is a short time away.
