Day: 103
Crossing Frost Lake
Temperature: 10F
Location: Frost Lake
Latitude: 67deg 40’ 59’’ N
Longitude: 90deg 44’ 03” W
Distance Traveled: 28 Miles
We had temperatures that rose to 10 degrees above zero Fahrenheit today, which is quite warm. We had a wonderful lunch break. The six of us sat by the sled, no pain, just like a spring day. Plus 10 is some of the warmest temperatures we have had here. The dogs are running very fast, we have hard surfaces, no loose snow, just ideal conditions. We had a south wind today. We had some clouds move in, but we are trusting the weather. Normally in the Barrens this would be a sign of a storm on the way, but it seems like this weather is going to stay around for a while.
We went down the Arrowsmith, and then up a divide to Frost Lake. Tomorrow we will be down on the Kellett River, and we will follow this river for about three days, and then we will be at Pelly Bay.
We have a German film crew coming in about three days from now. They are flying in, and will spend the last 36 hours with us, doing a documentary on the Arctic area and our expedition. So we are looking forward to meeting some people when they fly in in a few days.
It is a very peaceful evening here. At 8:30 the sun set, but it is really pretty light. Hugh is in the tent sewing his mukluks without the aid of any a headlamp, The sun is rising about 3:30 a.m., so it is quite light in the morning. We are on Central time still, we haven’t switched over to Daylight Savings Time. But once we do, darkness will literally disappear from our lives. The sun is coming back very quickly here towards 24 hour light.
It’s good spring travel, but we are hoping the weather doesn’t warm up too much. 10 degrees above is perfect for us, and we couldn’t ask for any better. The dogs are happy, and everyone is getting along well.
